TUATH - Songs of the Northlands

TUATH is a musical and cultural exploration of the connections between the Gaels and their nearest Atlantic neighbours.

This stunning album, released February 2020, includes traditional songs as well as new material by Ó hEadhra & Mackenzie, sung in Scottish Gaelic, Danish, Norwegian, Irish Gaelic and Galician.

The music speaks to our past, present and future, ranging from the simple voice to expansive arrangements and exquisite sound design by composer/musician Mike Vass.

Brian Ó hEadhra & Fiona Mackenzie have, once again, delivered an inspiring work of beauty, honesty and integrity.
As its predecessor, Tuath may take a moment to settle with you. But take some time, let it sink in and do put on your better headphones – this audio labyrinth is best navigated with good equipment. What Ó hEadhra and Mackenzie are doing is not only great music; they seem to be on a rare mission to create their very own, bold vision of this particular tradition. What they have so far come up with is challenging, and it is gorgeous.
Celt Brit Folk
The duo's music is simultaneously ethereal and evocative and sonically stimulating, extending from the simple arrangements involving acoustic stringed instrument, bodhran drum and piano to more expansive and experimental ambient electro-soundscapes with synthesiser and beats.  Their inventive interpretations of ancient Gaelic texts and newly written material - delivered in Scottish and Irish Gaelic, Danish, Norwegian and Galician, often with layered harmonies - are enchanting and engaging.

The Highland singer-songwriter duo, Brian Ó hEadhra | Fiona Mackenzie, have released their highly anticipated debut album, TÌR – Highland Life and Lore, on the Anam Communications record label. Co-produced by esteemed musician/composer Mike Vass, this album reflects their traditional Gaelic roots as well as other musical influences including Nordic, Eastern European and electronica.

Whilst the duo's live sound has been called "ethereal and evocative", the album TÌR has been described as "sophisticated, ambient and cinematic". With layered harmonies, innovative interpretation of ancient Gaelic texts and songs as well as newly written material, Brian Ó hEadhra | Fiona Mackenzie have made a unique, high-end production album which would lend itself well to film and television soundtracks.

Texts such as "Beannaich a Thriath Nam Flath Fial" and "Tha Mi Dol Dhachaigh Leat" are from "Ortha nan Gàidheal | Carmina Gadelica", the inspirational collection of folklore which was compiled by Alexander Carmichael over a hundred years ago. Inspired by the beauty and depth of the words, the duo created their own melodies to reflect the subject matter.

Working closely with musicians Keith Morrison, Innes White and Mike Vass, traditional Gaelic songs such as "Cha Bhith Mi Buan" and "Iomraibh Eutrom" have received innovative arrangements and sound-design which has resulted in a truly original sound.

TÌR – Highland Life & Lore is supported by Creative Scotland Open Project Fund and through a successful crowdfunded Kickstarter campaign.

“TÌR is a revelatory journey into the past and present of Scottish Gaeldom; it repopulates the soundscapes of the Highlands with rich aural textures and compelling lyrics that recall a complex compass of activities, beliefs, and personalities. It is a dramatic testimony to the skills and creativity of seasoned musicians demonstrating the wealth of Gaelic tradition and to ongoing efforts to revitalise, reimagine, and reclaim the artistry of the land and its native culture.”
